The last handyman departed years ago, with work unfinished, amidst rumors of bloodthirsty creatures peering from the basement of Hallward House.
It’s all frightful nonsense, of course.
It’s true that there is something like a peephole facing out from the darkness, but it can only be just another of the many gaps left by the builders who vanished before construction was finished. Half of what they did do made little sense—hanging doors at the wrong angles and such—as if they hadn’t understood how normal humans move from room to room.
This “peephole” isn’t at quite the right height for a natural man. I suppose if there were some crouching carnivorous ghoul in basement, this might be the right height for them.
But we are modern people who don’t believe in such weird tales.
